WOW!
"The Happiest Baby on the Block" arrived at a pretty darn good time....it arrived on Wednesday and I inhaled it and loved the ideas that were presented in there. It talks about using the "5 S's" in calming a fussy baby - Swaddling, Shhing, Side/stomach, Swinging, Sucking....and it really gives a good insight on what babies are going through the first 3 months of life....how they are really born too soon and that there is actually a "fourth trimester". All of the 5 S's work together to recreate the sensations of being in the womb. My first challenge was finding a blanket that I could use to swaddle. Apparently, if that's not done correctly, it's not going to work. They suggested using a square blanket, but I couldn't find one in all the many blankets I had that would work. Well, yesterday I was at the end of my rope. I wasn't feeling good, I had come back from Turkey and Paul was in major cranky mode yet again. Seemed like all he wanted to do was eat and honestly, I was drained! He had that frantic look on his face, and I was feeling kind of frantic myself. So I grabbed a blanket that was big, even though it wasn't a square and took my screaming little boy and plopped him on the blanket and did the best I could with what I had. He kept screaming while I was putting the blanket around him, but the second I picked him up and started rocking him and shhing he COMPLETELY changed. (Apparently a half-assed job on the swaddling will work with Paul Daniel! LOL) The frantic crying and whining stopped....he had this beautiful calm look on his face and within minutes he fell asleep!!! It's not a fluke because everytime I sense that cranky mode being turned on I just swaddle him and do the other things I've learned with him and the miracle happens over and over. And he even will sleep on his back!! AMAZING. Thank you, Dr. Harvey Karp!
